How generation Z prepares for the TOEIC tests?

Generation Z reinvents learning

According to the ETS study, Human Progress Report, published in April 2024, 77% of Generation Z (Gen-Z) question the necessity of formal education. They adopt interactive tools and innovative approaches to enhance their language skills.
Celestina Cardoz Maury, Head of Academic Relations at ETS, and Anthony Kuntz, President and Founder of digiSchool, held a conference on Gen-Z and their preparation for TOEIC® tests at the Learning Technologies event on January 29, 2025, in Paris.

Generation Z: digital natives with specific expectations

Born between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z has grown up in a constantly evolving technological environment. This early immersion has shaped their learning style. They are multitaskers, possess strong visual memory, and are inclined towards digital tools.

Celestina CARDOZ MAURY highlights the decreasing attention span of this generation: "Attention spans are plummeting: today, it is down to 8 seconds, which is less than a goldfish! As educators, we must integrate more visual and engaging resources into our platforms and programs."

Anthony KUNTZ adds: "In the past, we imposed our learning methods. Today, learners find their own solutions: technology, ChatGPT, TikTok... We need to adapt to their level."

Faced with this new reality, the speakers shared innovative solutions to capture and maintain the attention of this connected generation in their TOEIC® test preparation.

Key Tools to Support Generation Z in Learning

Developing Interactive and Visual Learning

Having grown up in a world dominated by social media, Generation Z learners prefer visual learning. They enjoy watching videos to understand complex grammar rules or pronunciation techniques.
Anthony KUNTZ emphasizes the role of videos, games, and flashcards in keeping young learners engaged: "Gamification is not just a trendy concept; it is a powerful tool to transform test preparation into a fun and memorable experience."

Focusing on Practical Content

Both experts explain that Generation Z highly values skills that are transferable to real-life situations, such as job interviews, international exchanges, or email writing.
Celestina CARDOZ MAURY highlights that TOEIC tests meet this demand by including practical exercises such as describing images, answering real-world questions, and expressing opinions.
To better prepare Generation Z for TOEIC tests, Anthony KUNTZ explains how digiSchool has redesigned its content: "We have adapted our application to provide content designed for Generation Z, reinforcing the visual aspect and integrating semi-realistic test simulations. Today, we are the only ones on the market offering real TOEIC preparation tests."

Personalization and Instant Feedback

Personalized learning is a priority for this generation. To progress, they need real-time and customized feedback. To meet these needs, digiSchool has integrated new tools into the Super Prépa for the TOEIC® test application.
Anthony KUNTZ states: "We developed Super Prépa for the TOEIC® test to allow students to track their progress in real time and receive targeted feedback."
digiSchool also plans to incorporate AI-based features to improve writing skills.

In three years, technical skills will evolve, but communication will always be a key skill in the job market. And that is great news because it is at the heart of our field.

A generation aligned with the evolving job market

According to the Human Progress Report 2025 published by ETS, 65% of Generation Z wish to obtain certifications in technical and digital skills, particularly in artificial intelligence. This trend reflects their desire to remain competitive in a rapidly changing job market.

Generation Z is redefining language test preparation, such as the TOEIC test, by leveraging modern tools and a pragmatic, personalized approach. The TOEIC test is becoming an essential tool for these young learners, eager to position themselves as skilled and connected professionals in both the French and international job markets.
