A Successful Transition to Online TOEIC Tests Thanks to “BYOD” Service

The “BYOD” service simplifies and accelerates the development of online TOEIC tests for training organizations and academic institutions.

Launched in January 2024, the BYOD service (Bring Your Own Device) is revolutionizing the conditions for taking TOEIC tests online. There is no longer any need to invest in computer equipment—each candidate can now bring and use their own device. Test sessions can take place on the premises of training organizations or academic institutions, in any standard classroom. No need for a designated computer lab!

Two institutions, CESI Saint-Nazaire and ISEGCOM Lille, were the first to test this new service and share their experience.

CESI Saint-Nazaire and ISEGCOM Lille: Two Pioneer Schools

Béatrice BEDARD, a teacher at CESI in Saint-Nazaire, explained that this transition was driven by the school’s desire to modernize its practices and provide an environment more aligned with students' digital habits.

Alexandra COSTENOBLE, Academic Director at ISEGCOM Lille, explained that the school chose to integrate the BYOD service to offer greater flexibility and regular test sessions for students who need a TOEIC score to prepare for a semester abroad.

BYOD: A Test Administration Option With Many Advantages

The BYOD service offers several key benefits for training organizations, academic institutions, and candidates alike:

  • Greater logistical flexibility: There is no longer any need for a dedicated computer lab. Tests can be conducted in standard classrooms, offering institutions much more flexibility.
  • Optimal security conditions: Each session is monitored by an accredited test administrator (TCA), ensuring a secure process. Additionally, a secure browser prevents the use of other applications or software, guaranteeing test integrity.
  • Enhanced comfort for candidates: Using their own computer helps candidates avoid the stress of unfamiliar equipment, leading to a smoother and more efficient test experience.

The Transition to Online TOEIC Tests

Thanks to the BYOD option, institutions can now organize online TOEIC tests more easily. This transition to a digital format helps meet growing demand for flexibility and accessibility from candidates.

Alexandra COSTENOBLE, Academic Director at ISEGCOM Lille, shared her experience:
"The BYOD service allows us to organize more test sessions, even at the last minute, providing a fast and efficient solution for our students. It also simplifies administrative management by reducing the time spent on test setup."

The BYOD service has made the transition to online TOEIC testing seamless. This format has helped modernize the TOEIC experience by offering a smooth and perfectly adapted solution for students. Thanks to this evolution, we can organize sessions more frequently and more flexibly, which is a real asset.

The Benefits of Online TOEIC Tests

Implementing online TOEIC tests brings additional benefits for both candidates and host institutions:

  • Significantly faster results: Scores are available within 3 hours after taking the test, compared to several days for the paper format. This allows candidates to react quickly if they need to improve their score.
  • A more comfortable test experience for candidates: The test's digital format allows candidates to use their own computers, offering a more natural experience than the paper-and-pencil format. Smooth navigation allows them to progress at their own pace, and to double check their answers if necessary in the Reading and Writing sections of the TOEIC 4-Skills test.
  • Simplified organization for institutions: Session can be set-up faster thanks to: optimized registration management and fewer logistics tasks to manage (package management, distribution of questionnaires and candidate answer sheets, etc.) compared to paper-and-pencil tests.
  • Reduced environmental impact: By eliminating paper materials and reducing printing, online testing contributes to a more eco-friendly approach.

A Sustainable and Forward-looking Transition

Given the numerous benefits of the BYOD service and online testing, several institutions have already adopted this solution for the long term.

Béatrice BEDARD concludes: "We will continue using BYOD to ensure a smooth transition to online testing and offer the best possible experience for our students. This is a necessary progression to keep up with current expectations."

For her part, Alexandra COSTENOBLE sums up the experience in three words: "smooth, practical, efficient".

The adoption of the BYOD service marks a significant step forward in TOEIC test administration. Thanks to this modern and flexible solution, institutions benefit from a more adaptable testing process, while candidates enjoy a smoother and more comfortable experience.
