New research reveals strong desire among young Turkish people to study abroad

A new study by ETS Türkiye Office and Akare highlights the overwhelming enthusiasm among young people for studying abroad, with 93.6% expressing interest in pursuing education in another country. The research, which surveyed students from diverse backgrounds, sheds light on key motivations, concerns, and barriers to international education.

According to the findings, the top reasons for studying abroad include securing a better career (90.8%), personal development (88.8%), and improving foreign language skills (85.1%). The desire for higher-quality education and the opportunity to experience different cultures were also significant drivers.

However, despite strong interest, financial constraints (82.6%) and language barriers (63.8%) remain the primary obstacles preventing students from taking this step. Additionally, concerns about adapting to a new culture, missing family, and navigating foreign healthcare systems were cited as major challenges.

When selecting a study destination, students prioritize quality of education (97%), post-graduation job opportunities (87.3%), and the ability to work while studying (70.7%). Countries such as the UK, Italy, Germany, and the U.S. remain among the top choices for international study.

The report also highlights the growing role of overseas education agencies, with nearly half (48.7%) of students relying on them for guidance in the application process. Social media (23.3%) and education fairs (33.7%) also play a crucial role in shaping students’ decisions.

"This research confirms that studying abroad remains a highly attractive option for young people, but financial and linguistic challenges must be addressed to make global education more accessible,” said Anna Gutkowska, Regional Director at ETS EMEA. " The TOEFL iBT test plays a crucial role in this journey, helping students demonstrate their English proficiency for academic and professional opportunities abroad, including gaining work permits in many countries while they study.”
